Cultural Shock

I returned home this afternoon to find the free, city paper that is usually crammed in the mailbox, laying out on my front steps, because the wind probably blew it out. Shockingly, the page that was on the top was the "Kulture" section which had an "artistic" panorama of a topless woman...I snapped a picture of it, but then I ran it by James and he doesn't think it would be appropriate for me to include the picture (I was going to warn everyone first and give you the option of scrolling down and then remove the picture 24 hours later!).

It reminded me of the trash they hand out in Las Vegas. But there is the strip and then there is the suburbia... We are supposed to be living in a nice, quiet little "family friendly" neighborhood. I think there were about 20 different poses of this woman, who thought of every facial expression and angle that she could to exhibit her large breasts. While she wore quite a bit of makeup and some gloves.

It's just a lot more "open" here. When you go to Real (like a Walmart), they have topless calendars there with the puppy and kitty calendars--you know, because they are all calendars so of course they belong together!

So, like it or not, delivered to my front door...we have soft-porn! Along with that, probably because of my reaction, I also got the privilege of having my first conversation with Thomas about this. I told him it was a naughty way for a grown-up girl to take a picture...but he wanted to see it, not just be told about it. He's so innocent...so what did I do? Well, at first I told him no but then I thought that might make him more curious so I showed him...he seemed to understand right away (which kind of disturbed me even more) and didn't ask to see it again or object to me throwing it away. And that was that. Good times at our house today!

Until later,

Emily

I told Alyson and Patty (Brad's) about your blog story. We decided that it would definitely a lot more open that we are now. I remember when Playboy and Penthouse was just as open as Good Housekeeping, next to the registers. Then came brown bagging them now I don't know where they are. The laws changed during the eighties and nineties. But we have never had free home delivery of such stuff. Just one more thing Mom's get to do. Hug the boys. Take care Love Always Mom

Well.... I guess you have that talk over with. I bet you never thought it would be when he was that young. The thing is, he will forget that talk you had and you will have to do it all over again.

I think you handled it well. Good job MOM.

It is very odd having that delivered, isn't it? When we first got to England there was an Airman who's wife was a Brit. She was telling me how hard it was for her to get her boys to understand that now they were back in England that nudity wasn't taboo. Amazing, yes? You see in England one of the papers does the "page 6" girl which is the same as the one you described.

In Germany we would pass this billboard with a nude couple on it selling beer or something.

You handled things beautifully with Thomas & I have to admit I'm grateful that it's you & not me! We're already having so much fun with puberty that I would hate to add nudity to the mix!
